You should definitely take in the Berkowitz/Cohen Gallery where a show
including Michael Lucero is now on view. For additional information on
this artist see the following virtual exhibition at the URL below:

I'd also tend to suggest that you visit the Kemper Museum of Contemporary
Art and Design as well as the KCAI (Kansas City Art Institute) where an
extraordinarily active program is ongoing due to the outgoing Ken
Ferguson, et.al. I'm sure that there are other gallerys and museums to
visit and would suggest that you consult Byron Cohen, proprioter of the
gallery mentioned above.

Hi-

The weather in KC isn't the best at this time of year (unless you enjoy
the idea of living in a sauna), but there is alot going on there in ceramics.

First off, you should plan on spending several days at the Nelson Atkins
Museum of Art. It has one of the best collections of ceramics in the US.
There is a very large (and nice) collection of English earthenware on
the first floor, and nearby some good Italia n and Spanish Maiolica,
and a couple of Greek figure vases. On the second floor is a fantastic
Chinese collection: everything from Shang to Ching. There is also a few
Japanese pieces, and a nice little collection of Islamic ware on the
third floor. When I lived in KC, I used to spend several hours a week
there, and I never ran out of stuff to look at. If you get bored with
whats out on display, they have at least as much in the basement that the
currators will let you see by appointment. They also have a great
bookstore and the best museum restuarant I ever been to. The restaruant
is very romantic: bring a date.

There are also a few good gallerys that often (but not always) show pots.
The Morgan Gallery is in the River Market area. Nearby it is the Arabia
Musuem that is quite interesting. It has all the contents (very well
preserved) from a Missoure Riverboat that sunk a century ago and was just
excavated a few years ago. It is a perfect snapshot of what was being
"imported" to the plains for the settlers right after the Civil War. Its
easy to spend half a day there.

In midtown is the Leedy Volkos Gallery and art center, and right next door
is the Berkowitz-Cohan Gallery. Both usually have ceramics.

The Kansas City Clay Guild has a Gallery and workspace in Midtown: I
haven't been there (it opened right after I moved away last summer), but
I believe they have an ongoing sales gallery. The Clay Guild members are
amoung the friendliest potters you'll ever meet.

There are a number of very accomplished potters living there, and I'm
sure they would let yo u see their studios if you called. Steven Hill,
Michael Smith, Debbie Wald, Lynn Smiser-Bower, Pete and Eva Wilken, and Tom
Powell are just a few of them (I know I'm forgetting many). You should be
able to get their addresses from the Guild.

While there, you should also plan on spending some time at the Plaza.
I'm not much on shopping as a past time, but the plaza is beautiful, and
has alot worth seeing (including a HUGE bookstore).

Oh yeah, one more thing. KC has world famous barbecue, and lots of it.
Don't plan on losing any weight while you're there.

Have fun.

Pete Pinnell,
bisy backson

Please excuse the typos: I'm in a hurry to get to a meeting

Just want to add to the comments about Kansas City.... first, ditto to
what Pete Pinnell and Meg Levine said. I lived in Kansas City for 3 years.
The Nelson is the best!!!! Especially when it's real Sauna weather... it's
always a bit cooler in there. The museum bookstore is great... other
places to go.....Westport. Check out a place called World's Windows....
they have local artists along with some great things that are imported...
clothing, jewlery, gifts, etc. A great bookstore there is Whistler's
Mother. Also have and Iced Cappucino at the Broadway Cafe.... Penny Lane
is the best place for picking up tunes.
I assume you will be going to school there...... everyone will tell you
all the great places to go.

Have fun!
