Hi Everyone,
I am going to be in Florence for two weeks this September and would love to
know if anyone has any info on any pottery operations that I might be able
to visit in the surrounding region of Tuscany. I am also interested in
talking with anyone who might know some of the history of pottery
development in the region so I might learn something about it before I go.
You can contact me privately at: slarson@ac.net
Thanks,
Sally Larson

functional and decorative--galleries and of course the great museum-
International Museum of
pottery. If you are interested in mass-produced majolica, Deruta is another
place to visit--mostly repro renaissance design.
Look about in all the small towns etc. In Siena , ask. And if you are in
Montalcino, there is a wonderful restaurant: Il Taverna del Grappino Bleu.
I think my French intruded on my pig-Italian there, but you get the idea.
Happy journey!

Ditto. Faenza is the place to go. It's not in Tuscany, but not far away.
They will give you a map with a listing of dozens of pottery shops at the
Tourist nformation center on the downtown square. We couldn't find any
suitable accomidations in Faenza (i.e. cheap but OK) and want to
Brisighella, a small, resort-type town 10 miles away, which was also
enjoyable.

>Hello Anjali!
I don't know of any specifics in the cities you mentioned, but you should
consider going to Siena. It's about one hour from Florence by bus. There
is a pottery there called the "Pelican", it's very close to the Siena
cathedral. I tried on three separate occasions to get in, but it was
closed each time. Their display was rather extensive and contained classic
Tuscan ware as well as some more abstracted pieces. It looked very
promising. Siena a gorgeus city too.
good luck and enjoy your trip!

Hi, thanks to all who suggested pottery places to visit in northern Italy. I
had a wonderful time and the town of San Gimignano has beautiful pottery,
both majolica and stoneware. It is such a beautiful setting to be in a
medevil town and see pottery that is made there. Thanks again Audrey

I will be going to parts of Italy for almost 3 weeks in March....staying in
Rome for several days, a week in Sorrento (with side trips) and a week in
Monticatini (also with side trips)...any potters out there? I would
really love to squeeze in time to meet and.or see local potters and local
pottery, in addition to the marvels of Michelangeo etc al!!!
Many thanks!!!

La Meridiana and Pietro Maddalena are near Bagnano above Certaldo. He
has pottery friends in
San Gimignano and other towns in the area. Be sure to visit the Certaldo
Alto.A great book for you is the Artist's Guide to ceramics Museums of
Europe by Alexandra Copeland. The Potters' Shop had it in the last
announcement. In it there are directions to collections. I believe
Montacaltini has a winery (I may be confusing it with Montapulciano) and
a ceramics museum in the winery.
Also, you might enjoy a visit to Collodi (NW of Lucca) and the
Pinnocchio park, (nothing like a Disney production).
