After reading the comments regarding the cost of refractory linings, I
finally had to add my two cents.
A refractory coating like ITC isn't the same as shelf primer ! Or use the
same ingredients. It's designed to do it's work in a totally different way,
not just as a physical barrier to prevent adhesion.
As far as the cost, potters are used to materials being relatively
inexpensive. Other than some of the glaze components, most materials cost
considerably less than $1.00 per pound. Many are only pennies per pound.
You don't make a product with ITC's capabilities with cheap ingredients, or
off the shelf materials found in most potter's studios. I don't know what
the formula is, but I'll guarantee you that the ingredients aren't cheap.
Anyone who's ever priced some of the exotic ceramics and refractories knows
that they run anywhere in price from $5.00 (very, very cheap) to $175+ PER
POUND.
We get what we pay for........and what we're getting ( provided it's used
properly ) is savings in fuel, along with other benefits of an efficient
kiln.
If we really want to get pissed off, let's ask why Kellogg's buys wheat
from farmers at $3.50 a BUSHEL, and sells it for $4.00+ per 12 ounce
box!!!!!!!!
