LINDA BLOSSOM on fri 3 oct 97
As I long ago promised, here are my figures on my fuel savings with the
skutt 1227. My firings are 17-18 hrs long. This includes a four hour
candle and 30-60 min soak. I go up 100C /hr. My kiln has 3" of fiber
around it and insulating brick under it and an insulating cover on it. I
close the lid at about 400C. My kwh was 168 without any coating. Then I
read Nil's book, The Art Of Firing and he mentioned the HUC coating and
said that it was a "silicone carbide slurry." So I bought some silicone
carbide and mixed it with thinned sariset and painted it on the inside of
the lid. My usge went down to 127-137 kwh. Then I coated the whole thing
with ITC 100 and 296a and my usage is 112-116. Yesterday's firing was 18.5
hours and I used 112 kwh. I had only one full shelf and 16 6"stackable
tile setters. In the bottom were Laguna rod setters. These may sound like
long firings, however, I only single fire so I go very slowly.
I remember Mel saying something about maybe coating his closet. Yesterday
I sprayed 100 and 296a on some drywall and fabric. I will be trying the
fabric in insulating curtains and hopefully will use it on a new wall in my
living room before I paint the drywall. I already painted over my test
piecewith wall primer. It is textured but ok. Plan to radiate a bit of
heat back into the room. Radiant surfaces are much more efficient than
reflective ones. Just look at an iron and then a woodstove. Obviously I
have been talking with Feriz Delkic a bit. I'll be putting 213 on my
husband's diesel engine when he pulls it out of his car to overhaul. I was
under my Mustang last weekend coating my exhaust system with 213. Trying
to beat the muffler people at their own game. They sell a muffler with a
lifetime warranty and then install pipes that rust before there is so much
as the smell of snow and salt. These products are very interesting. I
have a control wall opposite the one I want to coat. Anyone know where I
can find little stick on thermometers?
