Hi Folks,

Fourteen potters recently returned from a week's workshop with Juan Q in
Mata Ortiz and we couldn't be more pleased with our experience. We were
there to learn what we could of Juan's techniques, the results of which we
have admired for so long. I have written a trip report that is a mix of
Juan Q's methods and other M.O. experiences. It is a bit too long, I feel,
to post on ClayArt, but I would be happy to send it to those interested.

There are two upcoming Juan Quezada workshops that I am aware of in the
States. Please double check the details if you are interested --

1) INDIGENOUS POTTERY WORKSHOP

July 9-14, 1996 with Juan Quezada

Quezada will discuss his work and the remarkable Casas Grandes
pottery tradition. Students will be taught the principle
techniques used in making Casas Grandes pottery, such as pinch
and coil forming, clay and paint preparation, tool making,
surface treatment and decoration, as well as oxidation and
reduction dung firing. Students will leave this workshop with a knowledge
of the cultural and artistic history of this rich tradition. $450 includes
housing, meals, and materials.

Juan Quezada is an acknowledged master of clay pottery. He is the
originator of the ceramic industry of Mata Ortiz, and has been
featured in Ceramics Monthly, American Indian Arts, and Studio
Potter.
