Our first msg to CLAYART ( 23 May - query about Ketchup Red Glaze)
brought an incredible (to us) response . I posted the msg as I have the email a
Rose(my Wife) is the potter and artist & I am the builder & fixer of
the wheel, kiln etc. and together we are very interested & now
moderately knowledgeable in glaze chemistry . We have only recently
had access to the Internet and subscribed to CLAYART. We were aware
of "what it is all about" but when the results of a question actually
come in as they did we realised that we had joined something totally
new & valuable to us.
Re the Ketchup Red Glaze - we have corrected our mistake in missing
the Talc and using Insight adjusted the molecular formula due to our
considerably different Talc. The results of a test tile were
fundamentally similar to the first but with greater areas of very
beautiful red splotches. This using Colemanite - we are awating some
Gerstley Borate.
All tests have been fast fired to ^6 in a small test kiln. Trials on
slow cooling, as suggested , are to follow but it seems that we have the
potential for some very exciting results even if somewhat
unpredictable. Our Iron Oxides here are classed as Local or Imported
which unfortunately does not tell us much!
Many thaks all
Rose & Ian Jaffray
