We are first time participants in the listserv, and we have enjoyed the
access to this resource.

Here is a neat idea for children from ages 4 to 7, maybe older, we use it
this time of year with our MOMS AND TOTS classes.

Instruct the children to form a coil pot, 4" wide by 1.5" deep, and form
eggs to put into the pot. Have the Parents form a small bird or bunny to
attach afterwards.
It is critical that the coil pot has NO LEAKS, because we melt glass
(stained glass shards) at cone 02, encourage parents to help but not do.
Fire all CLAY pieces to bisque and then fire again with the eggs and stained
glass shards in the childs pot.

At the beginning of the class before Easter the parents can help their child
attach the small animal to the 'Nest'. This makes a lovely Easter gift for
Grandma or Grandpa, HANDMADE.

ok here is a good one for the kids, of which i have 3.

take a small amount of clay such as 1-2 pounds and center it.
then while the wheel is spinning, split the clay so that you are
now making a small saucer with a small bowl inside it. A couple of
tries will get this easily. the inside bowl is intended to contain
a votive candle. after leather hard, carve out windows in the clay
which allow light thru and originality shines as all pieces are
different.

Also try to make another votive container shaped like a closed bottle
form. after leather hard, then carve out different holes ( or better
yet get said youngun's to carve. At the base cut a half moon shape to
place
the candle. you may or may not place holes in the top to hang the piece.
Different shapes may be carved to reflect the different seasons. easy
for the
kids, and good practice for you.

Lastly push the above form larger and construct a bird house, complete
w/
cover over the door, bird pirch, etc., etc. )

good luck !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(Saw this at a store in Florida while on a workshop by Stephan Jepson.
more about this later,,,,,,,, good experience.)

I have found that kids love making gifts. Customizing mugs for mom or dad,
plaques for their bedroom door, and functional things. Another favorite is
a terra-cotta flour pot (pinch, slab or coil) with some slip and carved
through, glaze optional. Get some seedlings and have them pot them and watch
it grow!
