Hi Fraser and all,
At a beach firing weekend ages ago there were many kilns
firing all night among which was a raku kiln made from a refrigerator
with heart-shaped buttons. So when the kiln was opened in the dark these
hand-shaped hearts glowing red-orange was all you saw...

You can shield the wire holding the buttons by shaping the buttons
without holes through them. Make a button, then pinch-form a small,
shallow "half-moon" on the back side. Pierce the hole through that,
side to side. Your wire will now be shielded from the heat by the
button's unpierced face.
