All pipe threads are essentially mechanical seals. They are tapered in that
both the male and female threads seal and tighten securely from this taper.

To complete the seal(a necessity) and to ease the threading process, there
are two materials you can use.

Teflon tape is a standard that I have used for many years. Winding it
around the male threads so that the loose end follws the clockwise roation
of the threads, teflon tape is usually sufficient for most of us.

The best material I have found is called "RectoSeal" and is a heavy paste
type mixture of teflon materials in a base. It is suitable for water, air,
gas (both propane and natural gas) and other liquids and gasses, and is
useable over a very wide range of pressures. It stays soft and pliable, and
provides an effective thread seal.

These and other sealing compounds areusually avialable at your plumbing
supply house our your local hardware store.

These materials also go under the generic name of "pipe dope."
