Thanks for the great tips on making plates.I'm going to try them all!!
....as for kiln wash; I guess I should have been more specific. aside from
the occasional problem with american clay, most of my troubles are with the
local clay. I use a commerial kiln wash and I wax resist the foot. The
sticking is not caused by glaze running onto the shelf--it happens with
unglazed ware. Sticking may even be the wrong term; it's more like
"depositing". When I pick up a fired pot I notice one, two or maybe several
small chips in the bottom. The matching bits of my pot are still on the
shelf but are not "really stuck"---They can be picked of the shelf fairly
easily. The local clay is definitely a ^10 clay. Could it be the
reduction? Too much? Too fast? etc?
Thanks for all your help. Hope some of you can find the find time to
address my questions ---again!!! As for the alumina/kaolin; I 'll try it out
in next weeks firing.

That's my guess. Is the clay exposed by the cracks dark grey?
Then that's it for sure.

Whatever the cause that should help.

in regard to the pieces leaving pieces of the unglazed foot on the
shelf, this has also happened to me with ^6 porcelain and a dense^6
porcelain-like stoneware. i tried being more careful about having the
shelf smooth and covered well with kiln wash, but found that the best
way to prevent this was to let the kiln cool more slowly and not opening
it until quite cool, less than 150 degrees F. Also, sometimes when the
undeside of the pieces are unglazed, i sprinkle fine grog on the shelf,
and this works too
good luck,
michelle
