Kurt Wild, a well-known potter from River Falls, WI, recently visited Mata
Ortiz, Chihuahua, Mexico with me to purchase earthenware and spend time with
the highly-talented potters of this small village. I spent one exquisite
afternoon translating as Kurt conferred with Hector Gallegos and his wife,
Graciela. Graciela makes all their earthenware and Hector is the painter.
Their whiteware are featherlight and eggshell thin. Hector's dense black
and deep red paint enables him to create wonderful designs with his sure
hand.
For an hour the three artists, from two completely different cultures, found
a common ground--their love and "lucha" (struggle) in the making of pottery.

I must comment that I have a brother going to school in River Falls and get
over there often. I would very much appreciate some form of introduction to
Kurt. I've been trying to find some more ceramists in my area, and would love
to share techniques and stories. The only other ceramists I can find are very
closed minded in the area of art and are pretty much doing it to pay the
bills. I really hope to find some others with the same motive I have which is
to provide a workplace for those unable to provide one for themselves and
produce a product that is different from all the rest in the area.

I hope to hear from you,

Thanks,

Carl Ross,
