Has anybody heard of smokeless lamp oil? A customer asked for it today,
but I have no idea where one can get said animal, IF it even exists.

Lisa,
I use Ultrapure Paraffin Oil, smokeless and odorless. Available at
Walmart.

Try liquid parrafin found at real hardware stores. Very clean burning with
a less obnoxis scent.

Yes, it exists. You should be able to find it in a store that carries glass
oil lamps. Even someplace like a Kmart, or Target would have it.

I have used it for stage productions, in torch props.

Hi Lisa,
This is the stuff commonly used in glass wick oil lamps, because it leaves
less carbon build-up on the wick, and therefore leads to much longer wick
life. It is variously marketed as premium lamp oil, ultra-refined parafin
oil, smokeless lamp oil, etc. The key is that the stuff has a much
narrower smoke temperature range, so the smoke particles in the pyrolysis
region of the flame are smaller and more uniform, and tend to get consumed
rather than deposited, either on the wick or elsewhere. The oil much be
refined to a more strict specification than ordinary kerosene or lamp oil.
It is generally available in small quantities from local hardware stores
and lamp stores as a clear liquid. I have bought 2.5gal jugs of it from
Firelight Glass, 1000 42nd Street, Emeryville, Ca 94608, 1-800-645-8705.
I don't know where they get it, but someone must wholesale the stuff in
carloads.

Gavin

Lisa,

Lamplight Farms makes a brand called ultrapure that is found on most shelves
next to their colored lamp oil.

I have been told that parrafin oil is smokeless.

Lisa,

You can get high-grade lamp oil at Walmart. I noticed in my most recent
Aftosa catalogue that they also carry it and that it is now available in
colors. I've only ever seen it in quart bottles or smaller. It's labeled as
safe for oil candles and, though it is not entirely smoke-free, it's as
close as they come.

Hi Lisa,

Liquid paraffin is the smokeless lamp oil you are looking for. You can
order it wholesale from the Amber Lights Co. 1-315-445-8156. They are
located in Jamesville NY. Call for their catalog...they have some great
items. I noticed they now call the liquid paraffin "Clean Air Fuel" and
you buy it by the quart or by the gallon.
