I use Laura's Clear cone 6 glaze on single-fired cone 6 stoneware
(Navajo Wheel). I fire in an updraft Olympic gas kiln (oxidation) and the
first time I tried it, there was slight delayed crazing on one piece. I
subsequently added less than 2% silica and have had no more problems.
Because of its high clay content, I find this transparent glaze very
suitable for single-firing and there is no cloudy effect when it is used on
red clay. Gerstley Borate has always worked well for me in single-fire
glazes. However, I have never tried it on bisque because I never bisque.
From what I understood from the original question, Sande was having crazing
problems when using this glaze on cone 10 stoneware and porcelain bodies
fired to cone 6, which I think might be causing a poor fit. Why not use a
clay that matures at cone 6, especially if the ware is functional and
porosity is not desirable?
