Hello group,
I have a question pertaining to lead emissions from pots.
A fellow potter friend mixed up the following formula for a
copper red glaze:
ferro frit #3134
kingman spar
whiting
zinc ox.
silica
bentonite
copper carbonate
silicon carbide
tin ox.
ferro frit 3191
kona f4 feldspar
red iron ox.
He has read that certian chemicals combined with certian
fritscan cause lead leaching. He also conducted a home lead
test with a store bought kit. This test revealed that lead
was in fact leaching from this pot. The test indicates this
by the color and or smell of the testing material. The kit
does not have a chart indicating what level is dangerous or
exactly how much is leaching.
My question is:does anyone know an cheap and easy way to
find the percentage of lead that is leaching?
Any info. on the frit 3191 would be appriciated, we cannot
seem to locate it in our books..
thanks,Robert Moore, in Southern IN

Dear Robert - In my personal but educated opinion, this question
is crazy!! any lead leaching is too much. Since when is it
necessary to use lead to get a decent copper red??! Please find &

To all potters and artists,
Please be very careful when looking for fast and easy results, especially
with glazes. although adults can handle more lead than children, it still
is a very potent poison. children can suffer from memory loss and can
develop learning disabilities from lead. some can die if not treated. if
any of you know of craftsmen that are using lead in glazes or in woodcraft
spray finishes, please have get a lead level done right away, so they know
where they stand. also, make sure that no children are around the work area
or are exposed to lead dust or contaminated dirt.

I agree any is too much. That is why we are trying to determine
why this is happening. Hopefully the article will shed some
light. I guess you knew everything about ceramics when you got
into pottery, that must have been nice.
