Barbara:

There is a fairly inexpensive and simple to use kit on the market:
Lead Check Kit
HybriVet Systems, Inc.
P. O. Box 1210
Framingham, MA 01701
800-262-LEAD

I have no connnection with this company but have used this product on fired
pieces that were in question. It amounts to rubbing an swab over the
piece for about 30 seconds, there will be a change in the color of the swab
if lead is present.

Another product that I have not used is:

Lead Alert Test Kit
Sensidyne, Inc.
16333 Bay Vista Dr.
Clearwater, FL 34620
800-451-9444
FAX 813-539-0550

These companies may be "online" now, my info is a year or so old.

Hope this helps,
Donna Eyring

There was a news story the other night about plastic levolor/mini
blinds that contain lead. Apparently if you have these blinds,
they develop a layer of white dust due to the plastic breaking
down over time. This white dust contains lead. There were some
families where the kids had severe lead contamination problems
from sleeping in bedrooms with these kind of blinds.

Apparently the problem is only in the plastic blinds, not the
painted metal ones.

I know this isn't a clay issue, but I checked all of our
miniblinds to make sure they're metal.
