lithium amounts/toxicity

I do not know the level of lithium rated as dangerous, but in as much it is
the most reactive of the alkalis we use, once it is dissolved, it surely
should be treated with respect and all the normal precautions such as masks,
exhaust system, etc.

On the amount used, I believe there is some evidence that some of the
beneficial effects of lithium reverse as the amount increases. Please note
that a 10% addition of lithium carbonate is equivalent (on a molecular
basis) to approximately 3 times that amount of potassium carbonate and 5
times the amount of sodium carbonate. It can, due to its high activity help
smooth out glazes, relieve grazing and eliminate pinholes. The amount added
is usually 1/2 to 1 % of the dry batch weight. It also helps promote
crystallization, partly because of its small size and ionic mobility. Or
something like that.

Somebody who was a chemist more recently than I can add what they want. I
can handle being corrected and clarified. My wife has been trying to get me
organized for 35 years! To little avail, I am afraid.
