Last week I stopped in at a Chinese art & antique import store on Broadway
just to poke around & saw a cabinet full of ceramics from the Ming period; on
the shelves, along with their certificates of authenticity were some (4 or 5)
little green chairs. They were about 9 or 10 inches tall, made from rolls of
clay that were nice and round but not uniform with slab seats. Some were in a
state of disrepair, patched together with what looked like cement & quite
dirty but they were definately shiny green. The shop is not a gallery nor is
it a store but I asked how much the chairs were anyway thinking that I just
wanted to know and they didn't mention a sum but said that the price was
about a dollar for every year the chairs were old. The date on the chairs was
1638.
So I thought about them all week and yesterday went back to look at them and
the cabinet was empty except for 2 chairs.
I'm hardly in a position to acquire pots except by trading but would love to
have one.
I was in a Mexican border town three years ago (called Progresso) in a
grocery store and in the back beside a bin of potatoes was a bin of little
ceramic figures that were covered with dirt & straw and looked to have been
recently dug up & they were $3.00 each (I bought three); why can't the green
chairs be $3.00 each? They are perfect; they could be drawings they are so
linear; little green clay chairs.

Dear Anne,
Ming ceramics are pretty rare these days and mostly are smuggled or
stolen from China long time ago and passed on from generation to
generation...
They are expensive anywhere and really Ming ceramics are REALLY
hard to find...or acquire ..mostly because of the prices!!
To own a piece of Ming Ceramic to the Chinese is an honor...but I
don't really know why...:)
Jan...
looking for new clay with name...
