Hello, can someone advise me on how to solve a problem with a homemade
burner? This is a pipe burner with a blower, and the problem is that the
flame blows off. It's tendency is to turn far in front of the burner
tip, even with insufficient air. The only way it will burn is
yellow-orange, with a long flame. When I increase air and start getting
a blue flame, the flame moves away from the burner tip and goes out
before it turns all blue.

The size of the orifice is 3/32". Pressure is 2-5 psi. The pipe is 2",
with a 3" tee where the gas and air go in. The blower I don't know what
to call. It's made in China, has a shape like a snail, but doesn't seem
very high pressure to me. It is not a squirrel cage, not axial--it's
shaped somewhat like a Makita handheld vacuum cleaner/blower. The burner
has a flame retention head of fireclay. It is too small, pulled from a
venturi burner whose size looks to be 1 1/4". The center hole that the
gas/air mixture comes out of is 3/4".

If anyone can suggest how to modify this setup to make it work, I shall
be most grateful. The burner is used, by the way, for warming a kiln of
about 250 cubic feet.

I think I have a picture of your problem. The burner is two inches in
diameter, but sounds as if it is too short. An ideal length would be in
the range of 18 inches from orifice to burner tip. Also, you may want to
try inserting a wad of stainless steel shavings in this mixing chamber
about 4 inches from the orifice. Keep it loose. This will mix up the air
and gas for significantly better combustion and efficiency. Let us know if
you try it and the results. I think it will solve your problem. NL
