About 100 fortunate folks got to participate in a workshop this weekend by
Warren MacKenzie at the Potters' Guild in Roswell, Georgia (about 15 miles
north of Atlanta). The workshop was a great success and we were treated
to some beautiful north Georgia autumn weather, too.
On Saturday, Warren demonstrated his throwing techniques and many of his
well-known forms. Saturday evening we were treated to the opening of a
show of pots by Warren and textiles by his wife, Nancy, at the Berman
Gallery in Atlanta.
Sunday was spent with a viewing of slides of some of Warren's favorite
pieces, and demonstrations of Warren's trimming and finishing techniques
on the pots he threw Saturday.
All in all, Warren demonstrated his warm personality and quiet strength.
It should come as no surprise then, to realize where these qualities, so
evident in his work, come from.
Accolades go to Beth Wheeler and Ellen Pritts, principals of the Potters'
Guild. Their accomplishments in one year at the Guild are remarkable.
They provide gallery and studio space, as well as a veritable cornucopia
of support services to North Georgia area potters. They have booked Chuck
Hindes to do a workshop of his handbuilding style for November 16-17,
1996.
