majolica glaze

I am from a medium sized pottery club in which we make our own terra-cotta
clay from the local riverbank. I am looking for a very white majolica
glaze. I have tried a few but none that are really opaque. I've tried
increasing the tin oxide as the opacifier but to no use. I'm firing at cone
06 to 04, so I don't know if increasing the clay content will ruin the
glaze. I've also tried the glazebase database and found a few but they are
still too transparent.

Any recipie that really works would be greatly appreciated!

Jody:

Over the last few years I've used the following glaze in my classes:

White Majolica ^03 (from Linda Arbuckle)

Frit Ferro 3124 65.75 (I use Pemco 311)
F-4 Feldspar 17.24
Kaolin 10.82
Neph Sy 6.24
Tin Oxide 5.00
Ultrox 10.00
Bentonite 2.00

There is an excellent article by Linda Arbuckle in the NCECA Journal,
Volume 13, 1992-93.

The current issue of Studio Potter offers a series of articles about
majolica. Very informative.

Some tips for working with majolica I've discovered over the years
are:

Mix at least one part flux to one part stain for overglaze
decoration. Some commercial stains or oxides/carbonates are very
refractory. Some stains (chrome, rutile) may call for more flux.

To reduce and sometimes eliminate white spots in colored stain area
apply glaze one day, decorate with stains the next. I read about
this here on Clayart. I don't know why it works, but it does.

I work in Majolica and am having trouble with the base glaze receipe pulling
in spots. This is very annoying to say the least. Does anyone out there have
a dependable base glaze receipe that is pure white? Much appreciate any
help.

Hi - does anyone out there have a good cone 6 majolica glaze they wouldn't
mind sharing with me? My present glaze takes all the mason stains without
burning out, but has started to go thin on me. ( mind you, I did change my
clay body!) I thought that I would like to try some new glaze tests.
Thanks, Jill

There is a really good one in the "Mastering ^6 Glazes" book by John
Hesselberth and Ron Roy.
Thick, white and juicy glaze.
I got my copy all wet and need to order another.-great book.
