A fellow majolica potter has asked me to post his glaze problem to the
collective conciousness of cyberspace.
When he does the on glaze decoration and fires the work, his decoration
shows a haloe effect around the areas where he has laid down the colors.
This, he describes as looking sort of like a water stain. He feels that it
detracts from the decoration and would like a solution to the problem. I
have never experienced this phenomena in my own work(knock on wood) and
cannot suggest a cure.
He uses Mason stains mixed with his base glaze with the opacifier left out
and then adds glycerine to help with the flow off the brush. Sounds pretty
standard majolica technique. His base glaze has a small amount (.25 -.50%)
of rutile in it to soften the otherwise sanitary white.
One thought that did occur relates to the mineral content of his water
supply. It does apparently have a rather high calcium content. I suggested
that he run some glaze and colour tests using distilled water and thereby
make a comparison.
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Tell your friend to cut back on the amount of rutile.
