Hi everyone -
I'm writing this message for an acquaintance in hopes that we can find an
answer to her problems. I've not done majolica before, so forgive me if the
info I give is a little thin.
Ann (my friend) is having all kinds of trouble with pinholes. She is using
an earthenware claybody, fired to 04. The pinholes are only appearing on the
OUTSIDE of her bowls, the inner surface is fine. She uses Mason stains over
a white majolica glaze. (I don't have the formula, sorry.) She told me
there is some frit added to the glaze - as I think about this - I'm not sure
if she means the majolica white or if she's adding a dash of frit to the
stains.
It was recommended by someone the studio owner knows to soak the piece in
water, then apply the white glaze and procede as normal. Didn't work. She's
getting frustrated and many of her beautiful bowls are pinholed.
I told her I'd tap into your thinking caps as another resource. Any
ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. You can e-mail me privately
if you'd like.
Thanks a bunch!
