making a mold

Hi......I'm new to clayart, and have to say I'm glad I found you.

I am self-taught, so there are many, many things I don't know, so I come to
you as a humble artist.

My question is about making a mold for jewelry. I make porcelain jewelry
that I hand-paint and design. I am also branching out into carving
techniques, and more abstract ideas. On some of the popular designs that I
sell, I wanted to make a mold. Do you recommend latex? Could you reccomend
a good, detailed book for this process?

Also experimenting with deep carved tiles that I'd like to make a mold of.

Thanks so much......Linda Burns,Willowtree Designs

Linda,
I recently completed a mold-making class at our college. I am no
expert, but I believe you will have trouble with latex molds for clay or
porcelain. It is moisture-impermeable, so if it's a slip mold, it won't
dry. If it's a press mold, it won't dry evenly. Plaster is good and it's
much less expensive. Rubber molds have a limited life, like 6 months
after you open them (before mixing). If you want to branch into other
forms of jewelry making, such as bronze-resin, then rubber molds would be
a good choice.

Hello Linda,
If you are making porcelain jewelry and want to make molds to pour porcelain
(or to Press porcelain clay into), you really are going to want to use
plaster of paris. Scott Publications has several good (some relatively
expensive, some not so much) books on the subject. They can be reached
at 30595 Eight Mile, Livonia, Michigan 48152-9905, (800) 458-8237 (order
line, but you can request a catalog from there, too).

Latex would be good to make molds for resin pieces. I'm sure that Scott
has books on that subject also. (I don't have any connection to this
company, I am only a satisfied customer.)

Good luck.
