If you are looking for a terrific workshop to take (or someone to invite to
give a workshop), I recommend Malcolm Davis and his teapot workshop. It
started with a slide presentation Friday night, and then two days of
hands-on teapots with an emphasis on trying new forms and new ideas. He is
excellent -- and I had a GREAT time!

I just found out that Malcolm Davis will be giving a hands-on teapot
workshop at Worcester Center for Crafts, in Worcester, MA -- on Saturday
and Sunday, March 7 & 8. There will also be a public
slide lecture/pot luck on Friday, March 6, from 6 to 9 PM. I don't know
the cost of this workshop, but for more information, contact the:
Worcester Center for Crafts
25 Sagamore Road, Worcester, MA 01605
phone 508.753.8183
email: craftcenter@worcester.org

I took this same (or similar) workshop from him a year ago here in PA, and
it was great. I hadn't met him until that time, but after the workshop you
feel like old friends. He is gracious, unassuming and funny while teaching
us all a lot about teapot making. He was very good in dealing with many
levels of expertise in one group of about a dozen people. I highly
recommend it to anyone interested.

I have just learned that Malcolm Davis will be giving a hands-on porcelain
teapot making workshop at the Baltimore Clayworks on Saturday and
Sunday,June 13 & 14. Friday, June 12th will be an evening pot luck and
slide lecture. I don't have the other particulars, but Baltimore Clayworks
can be reached at 410-578-1919. It is my understanding there is still a
spot or two available.

I took his workshop about a year ago, and it was really great. He is a lot
of fun and gives a good workshop! Several people asked me to let them know
if he was in the area again, and I have mislaid their posts, so I am
sending this to the list.

I have now taken two Malcolm Davis workshops. I may become a M.D. junkie.
Seriously, not only is he a terrific potter and teacher but I have never
laughed so hard. I hardily recommend his workshops. He is a really
thoughtful and interesting teacher.

Metchosin International Summer School of the Arts presents=20
MALCOLM DAVIS: Porcelain & Shino: Mastering the Materials
April 13-14, 2002 9:00am to 4:00pm
at Lester B. Pearson College,
650 Pearson College Drive,
VICTORIA, BC CANADA

Malcolm Davis has been a full-time studio potter since 1981. Since 1985 =
he has maintained his studio atop a mountain in West Virginia, working =
exclusively with porcelain to create pots for daily use. The recipient =
of numerous awards, he has exhibited widely and his work is included in =
several museum collections. He has taught and lectured throughout the =
US.

"I first touched clay at age 40 and knew immediately that I had been a =
potter all along. I love to make pots! For me, the joy and the challenge =
comes from making things that will become an intimate part of the daily =
lives of others - pots that will be held, eaten from, poured from, =
sipped from and perhaps even licked from. The making of pots is, for me, =
a way to celebrate the mundane and make it holy." =20

Porcelain is perhaps the most demanding clay body to manipulate on the =
wheel and shino-type glazes are, without challenge, the most difficult =
to control.
This workshop will focus on his struggles and his stories, his tricks =
and his treats. We will talk pots and why we make them in the first =
place......we will discuss form and function as well as issues of =
personal expression and how one can develop his/her personal vocabulary =
as a potter. We will talk shino ad nauseum, discussing the history of =
shino ware and the differences between traditional and contemporary =
shino-type glazes. There will be much talk of glaze composition, =
techniques of application and drying, as well as firing schedules. =
Malcolm will show slides of his work and share many handouts. =
Participants are asked to bring a favourite porcelain pot or a favourite =
shino pot (or both) to share and discuss with the group.

Cost: $115. (Can.) includes GST and lunches and coffee breaks both days
Friends of MISSA: $105.

To register: Send cheque or money order payable to MISSA. =
(non-refundable except in the case of illness)
VISA and Mastercard accepted. Send to: Meira =
