Malloy Tan...I saw a slide this evening of a very nice large piece by Dan
Hammett of U of Dallas. It was said to have the subject glaze on it and I
fell in love with the color, the way it broke over the texture. A
wonderful mix of dark and light brown colors. Very warm and looked like a
velvety mat.

Anyone have the recipe and are willing to share?

Bob,
I wish I had the recipe of the glaze you mention to share with you. I
don't, but I just wanted to make people more aware of who Pete Melloy
(note the spelling) was. He doesn't get any credit these days for his
very important contribution to ceramics in this country. Pete Melloy
was a lawyer, and later Federal District Court Judge from Helena,
Montana. He was the first Chairman of the Board of the Archie Bray
Foundation, and did all the legal work involved in setting up the
Bray. You can see him in the background in some of the old pictures
with Rudy, Pete, and Archie. He's the beefy dark-haired gentleman
with the bushy eyebrows. In addition to being a fine lawyer, he was a
very accomplished potter and glaze technician. My first thrown pot
has a glaze on it called Melloy Stoney. He was also an amateur
painter, amateur archeologist, amateur photographer, and amateur
astronomer, and a fine pool player. These are only the fields of
interest that I know about, and I never met him. Anyway, I just
wanted to put in a word of appreciation for a man who made an enormous
contribution to our field without getting much recognition for it.

Paul:
Well on the glaze sheet at the workshop the following glaze was presented
as being Malloy (sic) Tan.

Spar 54
EPK 25
Dolo 18
Whiting 3

Add:
Manganese Dioxide 3
Red Iron Oxide 1

I didn't have this information when I made the original request and was
suprised to see it on the glaze sheet.

The slide was awesome.
