masks and face casting

Toni,

I do a lot of masks myself and with students. We use a plaster gauze
like the stuff they use to cast broken bones (check with medical supply
companies, also marketed through craft stores as "RigidWrap"). Use
vaseline on the face and cover eyelashes, brows and other hair with
small pieces of wet paper towel. The gauze is cut in 2 inch squares,
dipped in water and used to cover the face. Leave the nostrils open or
use a straw to breath. A good casting has 3-4 layers, with lots of
overlapping and smoothing to blend the layers. The whole process is
done in less than 45 minutes (by middle school students, I can do it
myself in 20 if the materials are cut and ready to go). I have the kids
work in groups of three - two casting one, taking turns to cast each
member of the group. Somewhere I have a class handout with directions -
I'll see if I can find a copy to send. If you have any questions email
me direct.

Have fun!
Anita
