I have been studying hand-built, Native American pottery for several years
now in the southwestern United States and Mexico. After studying with Hopi,
Tewa, Zuni, Acoma, Maricopa, San Ildefonso and Mata Ortiz potters, I have
come up with the following list of vegetable binders used to hold the mineral
paints on the pottery after firing : Bee Weed Plant, Agave Plant, Mustard
Plant, Mesquite Bark, Mesquite Sap, and Black Walnut Hulls. I would be
interested in hearing from anyone else who works with Traditional Native
American Pottery who may know of any other materials used as binders to hold
the mineral paint on the pottery after firing.
