mingei expo catalog

I was fortunate enough to see a Mingei folk art exhibit from the Japan Folk
Crafts Museum at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and Industry. The exhibit
closed here Sunday, 5 Jan. Unfortunately, the catalog of the exhibit had
sold out. I wonder if any of the Clayart correspondents have seen this
exhibit at some other museum where patrons of the bookstore may have been
less rapaceous? Or do they know where the exhibit will land next? If you
get a chance to see the exhibit, do so. The kneeding bowls, water jars, and
the soy paste jar are worth looking at.

Joseph,

I saw a wonderful Mingei exhibit at the Cincinnati Museum of Art around last
Christmas. It was exquisite!

My father kindly gave me the catalogue which I cherish, and see that this
show traveled to the Meadows Museum in Dallas.

This catalogue was writen in 1995, by Robert Moes and Amanda Mayer
Stinchecum.
The only reference I see given is to Art Services International, of
Alexandria, Va.
and the printer is Balding and Mansell, Peterborough, England.

Glad to see the appreciation. It really is wonderful stuff.
Someday perhaps I'll get over there.

Herb :

I agree wholeheartedly. I took my class on a field trip last Friday and we
really enjoyed the show. We also were unable to purchase catalogs
and would appreciate any info on availability and ordering.

The work in the show was from the craft museum that Yanagi Soetsu
founded. Clay, wood, metal, and fiber were included in the exhibition.
My favorites were the clay teapots, clay storage jars, brass kettles, and
bronze containers.

The show was a part of the Sun and Star 1996 Celebration. Two other
shows I enjoyed were Momoyama : The Golden Age of Japan at the
Dallas Museum of Art and another Mingei exhibition at the Meadows
Museum at Southern Methodist University. I also attended my first Kabuki
performance at the Majestic Theatre (IMHO, the best room in Dallas to
see theatre, music, or dance).
