motor for wheel

If you are planning to build a wheel from scratch, then I would suggest
that you consider the use of a belt driven wheel head powered by a
Permanent Magnet DC motor. This, when used with a rheostat-style ( dc
motor variable speed drive to be precise) foot pedal will offer you the
longest, most trouble-free service. This is the technology (not new)
used by Brent and Soldner...it's VERY reliable. Soldner uses a Baldor
brand motor which can be easily obtained through a Bearings,Inc., King
Bearings, Dixie Bearings, etc. They are distributors for Baldor. Also,
many others make similar motors, such as Leeson, Dayton (which can be
purchased through Grainger), US Electric. I can hook you up with a
source if you cannot find one. I have been in the motor supply business
for 11 years, so sources are many.
If you don't want to spend that much, other type motors can be bought
from Grainger , et al. and set up as John Johnson described. But the Perm
Mag DC offers better speed control and requires much less maintenance.
The rotation can be changed by a simple re-wire, so the direction of the
motor doesn't matter. A 1/2hp, 1725rpm, 115VAC( 90V DC) Totally
Enclosed motor is what I would recommend...but you may want to use a
3/4hp if you do big stuff.
Glad to help more, if needed.
