moving a kiln 4700 km

Has anyone had an electric kiln moved by movers? It's a Skutt 1027 (10 cu ft).

I don't know whether to sell it here and buy a new one there, or risk
having the movers drop it off the back of the truck in our new driveway in
Ontario! We can't move it ourselves for various reasons...

If it worked for you, how did you pack it?

Many thanks in advance...

Hi Vicki,

We have moved a kiln similar to yours and what comes to mind is that once a
kiln is fired the brick becomes very brittle. We had purchased one that
looked great untill after we drove it home accross town gently on padding in
the back of a pick up truck. It arrived with many cracked bricks and some
had even crumbled. I would suggest you make sure the mover knows what he or
she is doing when it comes to moving a kiln.

Good luck

Vickie,

I had a friend who moved her large oval Olympic from New York to Georgia.
The kiln sustained considerable damage. The shape of the kiln probably
contributed its instability but I imagine that it was packed improperly too.

Before I moved to California from Georgia, I looked into moving my Bailey
(10cu ft) kiln. I spoke with the ConeArt rep (they make the Bailey) at NCECA
about how to ship it. We agreed that it ought to go on to a pallet and be
strapped on to the pallet with a cardboard pad between the lid and the base
and surrounding the exterior. I made the decision not to ship it since my
stay here is for only another year.

You may want to call Skutt (Nancy Dransfeldt, Customer Service,
503-231-7726)and get her recommendations for packing and then get prices
from shipping companies near you using the specs that Skutt gives you. You
should then check with your mover and see if they will follow the Skutt
specs. It may be possible for you to pack it yourself and have your mover
take it.

Good luck in your move.

Vickie,

I had movers move my 1027 from California to Texas (approx 1300 miles). They
made a crate 39"X39"X39"(I think) high. It was cushioned on the bottom with
foam, then the kiln was put in the crate section by section. Packing
material was crammed all around to keep it from moving. Take care that the
plug doesn't damage the lid. Make sure that you note the condition of the
kiln on your pack sheet. If there is any damage, the movers are responsible.
We took the crate apart and made a table for next to my wheel. I had no
problems with the kiln after the move.
Have the movers come out to do an estimate for you yet? When they do, have
them make note of the special packing requirements. BTW, if you have a
piano, TELL them how to move it - don't let them "figure it out"!

I made the mistake of trusting movers to take my Skutt just a few
kilometres, it still works but she sure ain't pretty anymore. If I were
to move again I would definitely take the responsibility for packing it
myself. I suggest that you contact either the person you bought it from
or Skutt (503)231-7726 and ask how they package for shipping. Good Luck!
