natural gas raku burner

Clayarters please help......I would like to switch from using propane to
natural gas for Raku firing. My kiln is ceramic fiber, approxiamtely 6
cu ft. I have about 5-6" water column pressure on
my gas line. Can I convert my "weed burner" type burner from propane to
use natural gas? I assume by enlarging the orifice this might be
accomplished, but will I need a larger burner to achieve more airflow to
mix with the gas? I remember as an undergrad we used a big venturi burner
with natural gas for Raku firings. Does anyone have suggestions about how
to make or convert a burner from Propane to natural gas? Thanks

Hi Glenda,
I am using natural gas on a very large raku kiln with forced air
burners. Using natural gas will cost you more up front but you will
save time and money in the long run. I bought my burners from Ward
Burner (who is on this list) and Mark Ward was very helpful with
planning the system. If he is around he can tell you what you need to
know. The main problem with using natural gas was the distance from the
meter and the pipe size. Fortunately my kiln was built about 6' from
the meter so I didn't have the expense of extensive plumbing. Also,
"The Kiln Book" contains information on how to calculate pipe size and
distance for the cf of your kiln. Good luck.

Glenda,

Yes, you can convert your burner to Natural gas. You did not say what
pressure LP you were using. If you were using low pressure LP (11" wc) you
will most likely not see much difference. On the other hand, if you were
using high pressure (1 PSI or greater), you will see a large difference in
performance. Perhaps 2 to 3 times increase in firing times or in the worse
case, inability to reach temperature. There are several ways to go here, but
I would need more info to be able to help you. Please feel free to give me a
call..

Greetings clayarters, I hope someone out there can help me convert from
using propane to natural gas to fire Raku. I have a weed burner which I
have been using with propane. Can it be converted to natural gas by
enlarging the orifice? I have 5-6" of watercolumn pressure on the natural
gas line to fire a small fiber kiln (approx 6 cu ft.) I already have
the proper fittings to connect to the natural gas line, so getting the
gas to the burner shouldn't be a problem. If my current weed
burner won't work, does anyone have a suggestion for an inexpensive or
homemade burner which will work for Raku?
Thanks in advance for the help!
