I have purchased some stains and oxides. I want to use them to accent the
textures and imprints that I have introduced into the clay. I guess the look
I want to achieve would resemble antiquing...I want to brush it on and wipe
it off except in the grooves. I want no other glaze applied. I assume that
I would put this on bisque, but, how do I mix the stain to have it adhere to
the clay? If I mix with water and fire to ^06, will this adhere to the
bisque? I use low fire earthenware. Yikes...I thought this would be easy but
I have no idea where to go from here. Any advice would be appreciated. TIA
for any help.

Mix stains and oxides with a flux, such as gersley borate, then add some
water. It's very simple and will allow the stains and oxides to adhere to
the piece. I usually use about 60% stain, 40% flux applied to bisque ware.
Fool around with the percentages. The more flux you use, the glossier the
stain.
Good Luck! Lisa M

Hi Leddie,

You can just mix the stain with water to make a wash. Probably not to much
stain if you only want it to go into the cracks. Apply the wash to
bisqueware and fire. You can just wash the stain off if you get to much on
the work. It will stay in the cracks though. It is very easy. Hope this
helps. What kind of work are you doing? Let me know if it works.
