A local girl scout troop wants me to get their kiln up and working for
them. It's been sitting idle longer than 6 years. No one currently
there remembers it ever being used. They have no instructions. Someone
cut the wires from the main power switch so I told them they need an
electrician to reconnect it and check the wires for continuity and dry
rot (or chipmunk damage!)
The kiln itself looks like it's in perfect shape. It's a Dyna-Kiln model
H8800. I haven't heard of them before. There's no manufacture date.
Sitting loose inside is a module called "Kiln-Gard" which says it's an
automatic shut-off. It has it's own plug attached and is meant for
110VAC. I think it's supposed to be mounted in one of the peep holes of
which there are 2. The kiln is a short cube about 3'x3'.
2 main questions:
(1) how is the shut-off used? It has 2 pincer like prongs which I assume
sit in the kiln through the peephole, but what kind of (if any) cone
sits in the prongs? Or does it get used some other way, perhaps with no
cone?
(2) is there anything else anyone can recommend I do to check out the
kiln for proper action/safety, etc.?
I guess I'm just spoiled with my new Skutt which has instructions
included!

It sounds like it has a kiln sitter. A small cone would go in there and hit
the shut off as the coen bends.
