new skutt kiln hints

updated tue 30 apr 96

I just got my first Skutt Kiln Master 1027 kiln and I'm ready to fire it up.
Any helpful suggestions would really be appreciated as I've never had the
luxury of the computerized kiln before. I also will be using equal amounts
of a mix of EPK, Silica (325 mesh), and alumina hydrate as a kiln shelf
wash...is this an a-okay wash for high fire electric? TIA...and can hardly
wait to fire my first load after the test fire which is suppose to take about
seven hours or so.....Leddi

Hi Leddi
I am Kurt Unterschuetz of SchatziBoyz Pottery in Marengo, IL.
I fire in a km1027 skutt oxidation kiln to 2165 degrees fahrenheit as
follows:
Ramp method

ramp 1 ramp 2 ramp3
heating rate 300 (degrees) 500 108
to temp 1200 2100 2165
hold 0 0 0

I have good luck with a simple clear glaze from Les Lawrence of Ca.
I pulled it from an old CM:

Gerstley Borate 44.64%
EPKaolin 26.79%
Flint 28.57%

add vee gum t or bentonite for suspension. I make 8000 gram batches as
follows:
Gerstley Borate 3572 grams
EPK 2144
Flint 2284 It works well for me and its simple.

veegumt 80 (1.0%)

The white I use is called Leach White and is as follows:

grams
3124 frit 1868
Custer Feldspar 2449
Flint 1838
Whiting 1228
EPKaolin 611
vee gum T 129
Zircopax 611

For me this renders a rather nice lite white. I fire it using the same ramp
method above.

Hope this helps.
Sincerely,
Kurt Unterschuetz

If you decide to fire to a specific temp (i.e. 2165F) rather than a cone val
in mind that over time, depending on the frequency use, you should lower the tem
degrees every so often to compensate for longer firings. Newer elements will fi
and faster than older elements. It has been my experience to drop the temperatu
much as 25 degrees(f)on glaze firings from when new (the elements) to old to ach
consistent results.
