David and Margaret Frith (both Fellows of the Craftsman Potters
Association ... of the UK) have a new site at
http://www.pottery.demon.co.uk. It's not yet complete, and there are one
or two glitches, but I found it vey interesting. It was set up by their
son Gregor, who is studying computer science at Leeds University. He
would very much appreciate any feedback you can give him on how to make
it even better.

David and Margaret fire to cone 8/9 reduction (propane), using porcelain
and white stoneware bodies. They use a multi-layered and trailed glaze
technique which is well illustrated in their pictures. I know they'd be
happy to hear from you. Their work is mainly thrown or hand-built from
extrusions. The site has a large number of photographs.

Dear clayarters
Kalkspatz has a new website (the old remains valid):
http://www.kalkspatz.ceramic.de
I tried to offer in this site more to english speaking people: the up-to-date
supplement to our film catalog is now online completely in english language (you
will find there a nearly complete overview on ceramic videos now available in
the US) and you will find the start of the guide for travelling potters (but
only "Germany" and USA" are available yet - still would need some friendly
people to help with translations)
I wish you all a good 1998!

Well, Clayarters, with sweaty palms but great
excitement I am finally ready to say my website is
officially up and running. Well, almost officially --
still a few clicks or links or whatever you call them
to insert and probably a few glitches to unearth. But
nevertheless, I'm taking the plunge.
Please visit the site at http://berrywareusa.com. Let
me know what you think or offer any suggestions.
I welcome feedback before we face the rest of the
world.

Hi Berry- I liked your website; it was fun to look at. Actually, it's your
pottery that's fun, of course, and the site presents your things in an
easy-to-follow format. I can't remember if there was a "Back to top"
button? I do like those on a page. Another thing, this may be peculiar
to how our computer is set up, but your page, and some others come in too
wide for the screen, and I keep having to shift the page to the left. All
in all though, I think you should be pleased with your site; It must be
exciting to have it out there!

Ann in CA, getting ready to go for my morning walk- fog cleared early
today- 8:30 and the sun's out.

Definitely a fun site! I, too, had to scroll. But I suspect that it is
my monitor. I'm still using a 14" monitor with res set to 640x480. I
find that about 75% of the sites that I visit nowadays must've been
designed with larger monitors in mind, as I *always* have to scroll,
seems like.

nice design - some technical things to think about, if this helps:

like all Fireworks graphic-based page designs, you have to watch download
time - it's a bit slow in UK. individual images are fine though.
what's new link in main menu area doesn't launch the News window. it does
take you back to the first page, but you don't know that first time you try
it - it seems to be a broken link
images would benefit from using Alt tag to give a title on mouse over - this
would be very valuable for anyone [such as those with vision problems] who
turn the images off, or can't see them
the pop up window idea is good, but the window could be re-used, rather than
opening a new one every time. [give the window a name first time you use it,
then call it up again by that name with new content]

not sure what message you give if your work has a tag saying "dimensions
unknown" - probably better to estimate - put something in

question - what is the web site for?

hope this is useful -

Richard

As I promised, I am writing to let you all know that my first website is up
and running. I took a little quickie workshop in FrontPage at TTU, and that
gave me the necessary tools to figure out everything else. I have
thoroughly enjoyed the process, although I spent way too much time on this
over the last month. The address is http://iweb.tntech.edu/wpitelka/

I have had a number of people on Clayart tell me that I do not promote
myself and my work enough. Well, with this website I may be accused of
going to the opposite extreme!

Hope you enjoy the website. If you have comments positive or negative,
please do not post them to Clayart. Send them to me off list unless there
is something specific you want to say to the Clayart membership about the
website. I want to hear your comments, but privately. I will especially
appreciate any constructive criticism from those of you who are more
familiar with website construction.
Thanks and best wishes -

Dear Vince

Congratulations on the webb site. Easy to navigate and loads quickly.

It's nice to see the work of the argumentative, yet informative bugger,
that has been keeping me on my toes these few years.

What i liked was all the courageous big pots with imaginative and sensuous
surface treatments .

Now! I will have to put in more effort . I was thinking of building a new
(smaller) kiln. But I will hold on that and spend the money on more clay for
bigger pots.

Inspiring !!

Dear Clayart,

I'm taking the plunge and announcing my new website
http://laughingbrookpottery.com. This has been my obsession for too long now. It's been a lot of fun and many new things learned, but it's time to get it out there and get some feedback about what works and what doesn't. So have at it, and let me know what you all think. I've asked a couple of people privately, and changed some things. Now for a broader audience, while I hide under the bed.

Thanks,

Well, here's my feedback - I will look at the site more when I have more
time. But my first off-the-top reaction: Professional looking site, great
photos, wonderful pots, but the thumbnails take forever to load! I see that
the thumbnails are just as "heavy" kb-wise, as the enlarged photos. In
fact, they seem to be the same photos? I would say a thumbnail is typically
about 3-8 kb and these are 40, 50, 60 kb.

The up side of that is that the big photos load instantly. But the down
side is that your viewers (at least those on dial-ups, there are still some
of us!) may have moved on before that time.

I will be interested to hear the input of the website experts.

Chris -
nice look and feel to the site. happy father's day to you! that quite a gift
;-)

here are some things you may want to pas on to the step daughter....
1. the "greenman ceramics" and "home" links are producing a 404 error (page
not found.... there's a problem in the link
2. on gasfired.htm and woodfired.htm the links in the left column of the
table are not active. there is no action on rollover.
3. the background for the links table column on reume.htm is not covering the
entire column, as it does on all other pages.
4. there is a small amount of black, serif, italic text on the gallery pages.
italic can be tough to read, even in small amounts. And its up against a
textured background, which makes it harder. The rest of the text (in graphics) is
serif, so I can see the design choice to use a serif font, but she may want to
revisit the italics.
5. the 404 error is a generic Apache error ... see if your ISP/hosting
company will let you create your own 404.

Items 1 and 2 are minor, fixable, glitches. Items 3, 4, and 5 may require no
changes at all ... they are just design suggestions.

Having made these comments ... let your step daughter know that she created a
very attractive, user friendly site. Nice color choices and good overall
design! Congratulations to her.

BTW, she may want to know that I checked the site in IE 6, AOL's IE, Netscape
7, and Netscape 4.61.

I've started work on a new website for myself. Fairly soon, when I've
had some digital photography done of my work, there will be a gallery of
my ceramics, drawings and oil paintings added. In the meantime, the site
consists of little more than a few completely arbitrary declarations,
links and whimsicalities. A few links to some clayarter's websites are
included, more will be added in the fullness of time.

Ellie - Nice clean look, very functional. I'm connected via broadband
so I don't know if there will be any problems with the images for
folks using dial-up connections or not.

On another note - I want to publicly thank you for putting me onto
your process of creating pedestals for crystalline glaze ware. After
many years of throwing pedestals, I finally used your method of
combining some simple materials and making thick patties to prop up
the pots. The stuff really does come off much easier after firing. I
also coated the stuff with alumina.

Hi William,

Thanks for visiting. I am glad it worked well for you. I am finding it =
is different with everyone. Some say what you said and others say it =
loads to slow and the thumbnails are distorted. I am still trying to =
get the kinks out. My son did the actual building of the site. I just =
furnished the material and where and how I wanted it to look. I am =
going to change the pictures in the galleries every couple of months so =
the site will always be fresh. The sale page will update too. If it =
sells great if not I will replace it in a couple of months. =20
You always say such nice things about my work and I really appreciate =
it. It gives one the motivation to move forward. I am working with the =
rare earth oxides and trying to develop some black light crystal glazes. =
It is going good so far. I just need to figure out how to photograph =
them. Any ideas?

Ellie,
Congratulations on the launching of your wonderful new web site.

Hello all,
I'd like to share my new website with you all:
http://www.garycarlos.com

In anticipation of questions some of you may have:
Yes, I put it together myself. I used a template from godaddy.com. The
package is called "website tonight" and cost about $70 for a full years
service which included domain reg, hosting and online website building.
Yes, it took a little while to figure out at first, but now I can change
and update it in minutes.

Hi Mark,

The site looks great! I do have two comments:
The fact that it is in a pop-up window I find aggrivating, especially since
there is no 'back' button such as a normal internet window has, only a
graphical one at the bottom of the page, and my trained responce in that
case is to close the window when I'm done looking at a piece, so I then
have to load up the whole webpage again.

The little descriptions that pop-up when I mouse over a picture are so
obvious ("Well of COURSE it is a covered jar"), and did not really add
anything useful information, that I found it really detracted from the
experience.

Heather Pederson's comments regarding a new web site --Mark's -- brings up
an interesting concept for consideration. There are folks out there who
will be "sitting by Nellie" at the monitor being assisted to browse, or have
Jaws or IBM's Home Page Reader - which read the page aloud to the visually
impaired -- and those little descriptor tags are crucial. Open an art/craft
book or a mag and there are the old obvious descriptors: plate with
dimensions, covered jar with dimensions. It's a convention which one should
take in one's stride. An article from www.globalknowledge.com brought these
concepts to my attention, and there's another site which would provide
guidelines www.webexact.watchfire.com

That aspect of assisted browsing had not occurred to me, thank you for
bringing it up.

I think the text description pop-ups should say more then "Covered Jar",
when most of the pictures on the page have the exact same description.
Prefereably each picture would have a unique description in some way.

Snail,

I absolutely love your work!!!!

Re - the your new website - It's great on my Windows XP machine - EXCEPT
your resume'. The type/font shows up so small that the white in the
letters fades and the black shows through, obliterating much of the
text. Suggest you change to a larger font AND a different combination of
font and background. But- most likely going to a larger font will solve
the problem.

John

There's a known issue with some peoples' eyes and white-on-black text. If
you are "mature" and that includes ME, white on black text gets cloudy. I
never use it with my sites since I can't read it easily myself.

This site was done at a three-hour workshop on iWeb.
It is intended only as a temporary stopgap until I can
get the 'real' site at snailscott.com written in Dreamweaver.
Now that I've got the basics worked out, I'm pretty sure I can
figure out how to caption the images with more info. (The
file name gets put in automatically as the image caption in
iWeb, unless you change it.)

The figural works are the oldest, some going back 20 years.
The Armature series has been going, on and off, for about
the last 10 years, and are mixed media- a lot of clay, some cast
bronze, and other stuff, depending on the piece. The installations
are mostly in the last five years, interspersed with the 'Arrmature'
pieces and some other stuff I didn't put up. The figures range in
size from about 2' tall up to life-size (if that has any meaning in
this context!) The yellow feline figure, for instance, is about 4' long
from knuckles to toes, and the black one with pointy ears is about
32" tall. The 'Armature' series is mostly around life-size for a
human arm. I've done some that are more entire-person-sized
(5-6' tall) but I didn't happen to post those images, since the
scale shift would look odd without captioned size indications.
The installations, at least, have a better sense of scale in the
image alone.

Improvements to come shortly, though probably not major ones;
I want to put the effort into the 'main' site, as I think there are
things
I can learn to do in Dreamweaver that aren't possible in iWeb.
The iWeb sure was fast and easy, though.

Thanks for everyone's feedback!
