no-craze clear glazes for porcelain

updated mon 31 mar 97

Well it happened. They said it would and it did. I lost my hard drive and
with it all of the stuff that I'd been saving to print and file. Spring
you know and busy busy. Now I'm backing up everything in case of the
dreaded CRASH.

If any of you ClayArter's saved the thread on no-craze clear glazes for
porcelain I'd be in debt to you if you'd post it on ClayArt or send it to
me a bhanin@ionet.net.

Thanks in advance from one who is sad but smarter (I hope).

Hi There... you asjked if anybody saved this thread . I did Here's what
Craig Martell (ashglaze@teleport.com) submitted that he developed in 1980
for porcelaine ^10 oxidation or reduction:

Clear

Dolomite 4.7% by weight
Whiting 15.9
g-200 feldspar 30.2
6-t kaolin 18.9
amorphous silica 30.3

add: Macaloid 1.5

Your timing is good. I wnated to know if this would work well over engobes.
All our glazes at the College here cloud at ^10 and we're looking for a good
clear. I want to try come Mashima and can't until we get a successful one.
I also do not know what Macaloid is or an exchange for 6-t kaolin. Emily in
Astoria where the sun's peeking, but da clouds, dey is Grey...

Macaloid is a suspending agent...You can use bentonite at a substitution
ratio of.......::thinking:: ...of....Umm....of...Someone help me out
here, I don't have my notebook next to me...I forgot the ratio. I
remember adding ABOUT (don't quote me on this) 1.5 bentonite to every 1.0
of macaloid.

Bob :

The following glaze has worked well for me :

SH 232 Clear (from Steven Hill)

Potash Feldspar 42
Whiting 24
Kaolin 15
Flint 28
Bentonite 4
Frit 3110 5

Good luck!
