northstar slab roller

I was at Pottery Supply House yesterday in Oakville, Ontario and looked at a
Northstar slab roller.

Having never used a slab roller, I really didn't have a basis for comparison
- but it looked very sturdy and well-made. It was a 24" with a 4' table.

My question is about price. This one was priced at $1,078.00 canadian.
When I questioned the price, the answer back was (as far as I can quote):
most everything these days costs a thousand dollars - just look at a new
wheel. (Obviously, this answer shed NO light).

My question is: how much have you guys paid for a similar model; and please
state is you are talking in USF or CDN. I'm seriously considering the
purchase BUT want to make sure I'm not overpaying for the product.

Until then just call me
sam - looking for more and more used equipment....

My favorite tool for smoothing the canvas texture off a slab is a
plastic triangle. A couple of scrapes with one ( at an angle) and the
surface is smoothe. They are also nice for cutting right angles and
lines. I put them on the materials list when I teach beginning ceramics.
I have been a graphic designer as well as a ceramics person for years so
a lot of my design tools wind up in the ceramic studio.

I bought a 30" Northstar slabroller with the longer table a few months
ago. I bought it from Bennet's. I have no specific
interest in the company but I was very impressed with their delivery
I ordered the machine on Monday and it arrived in Colorado on Friday.
Their price was really low as well. Like I said... I have no interest in
their company....
I have been happy with Northstar's customer service...

One problem I had in the classroom with the Northern Star Slab Roller
was the plastic gears. One several occasions student forced the clay
and snapped the plasitc gears. The company always replaced them for free
but they are not as heavy duty as the brent of the Bailey rollers. I have
used all three. -Marcia in Montana

Dear Sam,

I owned a Northstar slabroller. I now use a 40" Bailey, electric. It all
depends on what you will do and how much. I am able to put much thicker
slabs of clay on the new roller and roll a much larger slab in one pass.
With the Northstar, I had to slice the pugged clay into about 4 layers, and
roll the slab in about 4 passes. If you will be working primarily in slab,
do not get a small roller - get one with large rollers and a larger bed. I
wonder how I ever made some of the pieces that I made using that little
Northstar slabroller. There is no comparison between what you will do and
how easily you will do it if you go to a larger slabroller. The size of the
rollers, top and bottom, is very important.

I PURCHASED THE NORTHSTAR 24" AT THE CONFERENCE AND PAID $570 WHICH WAS A
GREAT PRICE.

I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR AWHILE AND THAT WAS THE BEST I'VE SEEN FOR WHAT I WAS
GETTING. THIS INCLUDED TABLE, BIG WHEEL, CANVAS...
THIS MODEL USUALLY RUNS AROUND $700. DEPENDING WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING AT
EXACTLY AND WITH THE EXCHANGE YOUR PRICE LOOKS LIKE IT'S IN THE BALLPARK.

GOOD LUCK!

I wish to thank everyone that responded (both publicly and privately) about
the Northstar Slab Roller.

Seems the price at PSH is about right for the product. As I don't intend to
use it on a daily basis, I don't need a heavier duty (and more expensive)
product.

That being said, I really don't have the $1200+ (with tax) that the unit
will cost....so I'm now actively searching for a used unit (brand unimportant).

I live less than 2 hours from detroit and Toronto (in the middle) and am
willing to drive up to 8 hours to purchase.

Please contact me if you have a slab roller for sale.

I looked at ten catalogs and bought from Axner - they were the
cheapest...Both pieces of equipment I bought from them were here within 7
days after they received my order, both in perfect condition....(they both
came from Washington state)

Sue in Rochester NY where it is still raining....I don't think the lilacs
will be out for the Lilac Festival...God! I hope it stops raining for the
Lilac Festival..........
