I found fibers that are about 3/4 inch long at the local cement
plant. These would not work for throwing but I believe they would be
fine for handbuilding. they are very cheap, about four dollars a
pound. The cement company claimed they were fiberglass but I took
some back to the studio and they burned; so they must be nylon or
polyester.
Good luck and let us all know how they work. I have a grad student
I am pushing to try them.

I use nylon fibers for making large (life-size) porcelain figures.
It works very well; never a crack even fired to ^10. Have tried
throwing some of the clay. It can be done, but trimming is
impossible, and in general it is messy and unnecessary
to have fibers in throwing clays.
The nylon is cheap; mine are about 1/2 - 3/4", it goes a long,
long way. Can't remember the source for the fibers right now;
I'll see if it says on the bag.

Chopped nylon fiber is available from most ceramic suppliers. Most of what
is sold for use in concrete products is fiberglass, and UNDER NO
CIRCUMSTANCES do you ever want to use this in clay which you are working by
hand. As Lowell indicated above, these fibers were obviously not
fiberglass, but if you get fibers from a concrete products supplier MAKE
SURE they are not fiberglass.
