Does anyone out there have experience with an oil lamp liner made by
Kem-Lac 'W' which is distributed by Axner Pottery?
Darcy on tue 15 apr 97
This product is actually made by Sherwin Williams and called "Kem-Lac W".
You can buy it for half what Axner sells it for if you visit your local
Sherwin Williams store. However, when I tested it the liner buckled and
came out in cellophane-like sheets after having lamp oil in it for a
couple days. Big disappointment. (I bought a pint from Axner with the
intention of buying larger quantities from Sherwin Williams if it worked).

and to add to that question, is it true that these lamp liners can be
used to make raku pieces watertight?

I have used it on several raku pots I use as oil lamps and it seems
to work fine.Only one leaked but I found a crack in it.

To Thomas and Everyone else curious about oil lamp liner:
I've been using it for years. The only problem I have is that it comes
with a plastic container with a metal lid. The lid always gets rusty and
is hard to get off after awhile. So, I end up pouring it into an all
plastic container. I have never had a problem with the oil leaking if I
sealed it with oil lamp liner. I had a student who made little vases in
Raku and we sealed those. They worked.

To Mark:
Thanks for answering my question. Would that be the Kem Lac brand that
works for you, and do you leave the inside of the pot unglazed? Another
answer I got described a poor experience with Kem Lac peeling off in
sheets after a few days.
I had experienced a a leakage problem on a pot I had made about 2 years
ago, but I was also using a product called 'Protecto'. I'm not sure
which one was used on that lamp, the Protecto or the Kem Lac. Axner
discontinued the Protecto liner so I'm assuming that's the one that was
used. This is the reason for the inquiry- to find out other people's
success or failure with Kem Lac.
By the way, this is from Cathy not Tom. I forgot to make that
distinction when I posted my question. Our online service doesn't allow
for more than one screen identity when participating in the news group.
It does for e-mail - go figure. I've gotta get a new online service.
Well signing off now,

I'm curious, what is the purpose of a liner in an oil lamp?

Oil lamp liner is used to seal the pot to prevent oil leakage. It's used
in place of a glaze which might be crazing, has pinholes or have some
other flaw that would allow the oil to seep through.

I have heard that this lamp liner only works on unglazed surfaces. Carol @
