olympic gas kiln

Hi all,
I'm not sure if this will get to the list. The last several have
apparently
been lost in cyber land. What up with that!

I have inherited an old 7 cubic foot olymic up draft kiln.

(1) Does anyone out there fire a kiln like this.
(2) What can one do to maitenance the burners. Sometime I have to give
them a light tap with a wrench to get them to light. This worries me as
I would hate to see it fuddle up a firing by a burner going out midway.
(3) This kiln is outside in a shed. It is now winter up in Calgary, AB,
Canada.
When people talk about slow cool down periods (I always soak and cool
slowly in my elecric kilns) What do I do when it's forty below and I have
reached
cone 10?

I hope this make it out. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help this
neophyte gas kiln firing dude get up to speed. I would like to learn as
much as I can this winter as I have all the materials stored in a warehouse
outside of town for a 35 cubic foot downdraft I will begin building as soon
as spring arrives.

Cheers,
Rod Wuetherick

Emily,
I have not purchased a olympic kiln. I have experience with other gas =
kilns
as do other ClayArters. You said you are desperate. What is happening, or =
not
happening, with your firings? Please explain. What clay are you using,
temperature you want to fire, atmosphere for what type of glazes?
This information is what I am seeking on these kilns.

Hello all and Merry Christmas!!!!!

I have the opportunity to purchase a used Olympic gas kiln. Model DD-14, 14
cubic foot down draft, 2 years old fired very little to cone 6. No
electronic controls or kiln sitter. Furniture is included, for 2800.00. I am
not familiar with this brand. Is this a good deal?? Does this kiln fire
well? Does anyone have experience with these kilns?? All help will be much
appreciated!!!

Hi Gene,

How does that price compare with new? The Olympic site should have
pricing on that model. Is that the sort of kiln you want? You will have to
get at the very least a kiln sitter as the most basic safety precaution.

Gene - My university bought one of these kilns last summer for our ceramics
program. I have been very pleased with its performance. 14 cu ft is not
very big but then I have only had a 7 cu ft electric to fire til the
Olympic. So size is relevant. the University installed our kiln in the
studio. Not ideal but given the unique situation here the only viable
solution. I have found the the kiln seems to cool down the first 200 or so
degrees very fast. Firing down would help this problem. My kiln came with
all the bells and whistles - computer firing systems. until recently I had
only fired the kiln using the programmable method. The Fast fire setting
might be too fast but fits my schedule better. I have fired to cone six in
it several times and cone 10 many times also. Even fired to loads to cone
06 - bsique. As seems to be my luck with kilns, right when I needed it
most the thermocouple crapped out. Until October of this year I had not
fired a gas kiln since the late 80's. So I unplugged the electronics and
she fires like a gem. My biggest complaint about the DD 14 is the damper
and the damper arm location. the damper is a hinged lid on a short
chimney. The arm used to open and close the damper extends from the damper
at the back of the kiln toward the front of the kiln. This puts the metal
damper handle about 5'6" off the floor smack in front of the kiln. I am
6'4" tall. All in all I recommend this kiln and Olympic gas kilns in
general. The tech support staff was very helpful during the
bidding/purchasing process we had to go through and in those first firing
days as well. Since mid - October I have probably fired the kiln 30+
times. Keeping in mind I have only used the kiln half a semester, I would
buy an Olympic downdraft again.

hope this helps

Dear Arnold,

Long story which I have already told, but I detest Olympic kilns and detest the
company even more intensely. Just my own personal experience and feelings. I
could have bought a good kiln with the money I wasted on firing mine.

Greetings,
I am thinking about buying a new olympic gas downdraft kiln and I would
like to get
some comments from others on this brand of kiln. I fire cone 10
reduction. I am looking at the DD-12 model. I would still consider a
used kiln if anyone out there
has a sweet deal. Regards, John

I have been firing an Olympic DD 14 in a small school setting for a
semester and a half. I am very pleased with the product. I however find
the DD 14 a little small and can't imagine going to a DD 12. The biggest
problem with the 14 is I a consider to be too rapid cooling. I have not
adjusted my lifestyle to firing down yet but believe I will have to. The
damper handle onthe 14 is very much in the way and is difficult to adjust
during the latter stages of firing. I wholeheartedly endorse the kiln just
be sure you are getting the right size.
