orton cones, urls

Hope someone can help. Just bisque fired to cone 04. Had a small (new) 04
in the kiln sitter, and (old)06, (new) 04 and (old) 03 on the shelf (all
small cones). The kiln shut off with the 04 bent. On the shelf, the 06 and
03 (both old) were completely bent. The new 04 stood there (rather
obscenely) upright. Can you explain?

Also, when a glaze must be fired to a specific temp, is there that much
difference between the new and old cones?

Thirdly, I seem to have old URLs for Orton, Interglaze and the Ceramics
Web. Are they still available?

TIA!

Rita

Rita asks a common question:

>Web. Are they still available?

I can only assure you that the CeramicsWeb is indeed still available. You
may, however, have problems from time to time getting to it from the Internet
as both the Internet and SDSU's local and regional networks are often running
at near or full capacity. This is usually worst during the traditionally busy
time at schools - evening hours when students are in the computer labs. This
may also be true of your own Internet provider. Many sites on the Internet
report the peak business load is between 10AM-3PM. Times near the start and
end of the business day may also see heavy use as people retrieve email and
do a little browsing before going home. My advice is keep trying if you don't
get through, but at other times.

Try the CeramicsWeb at either of these URLs:

For Netscape users:
http://apple.sdsu.edu/ceramicsweb/index.html

For others (AOL, Compuserve, Prodigy, MS Explorer or other browsers that
don't support Frames):
http://apple.sdsu.edu/ceramicsweb/ceramicsweb.html

Last I checked the InterGlaze site was still available, but may be suffering
the same overloads as SDSU's network.

BTW, the glaze and materials databases are again working after a short
downtime for unknown reasons.
