Ron -

It sounds like the Orton is an EXCELLENT controller. I have a PerfectFire,
which (in spite of its bad reputation with some dealers) has worked well for
me in terms of controlling the speed and timing of the firing, but it has
only one thermocouple, and the heating is uneven. I can live with this -
you just choose what you put where in the kiln - but the orton sounds much
better.
Controllers are nifty, though, aren't they? I have a glaze that wants
special attention in soaking just below the cone 6 level, or it pinholes.
That was a pain in a regular kiln, but once I got the schedule worked out,
it's a breeze with the controller. It means I can fire overnight and not
worry. The worst that can happen, if there is a problem, it shuts itself
down and I have to refire.
And I am promising myself some play with crystalline glazes sometime....
