Subject: Ovenware body ingredients

There was a post a couple of days ago about adding kyanite to a body to
improve thermal shock resistance. I have also seen/heard of spodumene being
used for the same purpose, also pyrophylite (easier to write than say) and
petalite.

Continental Clay in Mpls is developing a 'fireclay with kyanite' body to be
called Tableware. I have seen noted elsewhere in this list, stay away from
fireclay. I've been using their regular fireclay to do oven and table ware
for a couple of years, with geneeral success. I say general, because lately
we've had some bottom cracking either in glaze firing (c10) or when first
used in the oven. I understand some of this problem may come from the
clay/glaze fit, some from throwing technique, a large part from drying
sequence, and some possibly from handling techniques. A lot of our pots have
large (8-12") bottoms. Feet are trimmed.

Questions: What do folks think the kyanite/fireclay combination might do?
Also I'd like to hear some discussion on the other ways that the issue of
developing a tough ovenware body might be addressed...ingredients and
techniques. TIA
