HI Dawne, thanks for forwarding me some of the paper clay discussion on
clay art regarding possible need for clarification about the patent. I'm
wondering if I should respond in some way, but due to my travel schedule
I won't be in a position to log on to clayart directly for the next few
months, I'm wondering if you could post all or part of this message on my
behalf to the community.

My intent is that artists prosper in every way whether they use paper
clay or not. My statements about the patent were intended to PROTECT all
artists from any legal problems of making and or selling work in paper clay
down the road if or when the patent is issued. By making a portion of the
information public early (ie before the patent is issued) artists can gain
enough understanding of whats possible to make their own in their own
studio to their own taste and need. This gives freedom to artists it seems
to me.

However, when it comes to commercial manufacture and sale of manufactured
paper clay to others a business venture, then all I ask is that any person
or company considering this contact New Century Ceramics to 1.get support
from New Century in their efforts (to save them time and money), 2. find
the facts about licensing to avoid any potential legal complications in the
future.
=3D0D
When(an or if) the patent is issued, the details of my claims will become
public until then I cannot legally disclose its contents to the clay art
community.

As always I make every effort to answer my mail and will be glad to discuss
this further with anyone who mmight have further questions. the web site
www.ceramicpclay.com/ncc may help also. I also wish to extend my sincere
thanks to everyone who has assisted me in doing this work. My hope is that
many people will benefit from paperclay.

This is surely contentious: how can she influence anyone else's prosperity
under these circumstances? I hadn't heard of Rosette Gault until she
decided to patent something or other to do with this: and I've read a
number of good articles about paperclay before and after reading hers.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there haven't been any legal problems through
history so far, have there?

They always had the freedom to find out through other artists/ceramists
working in this medium anyway. There is enough information out there
already for artists to learn whats possible. There are companies in the UK
making and selling paperclay - but not attempting to patent an ancient
method! - it's just ready made. Not all of these people learned about this
through R.G.!

How very generous...

But, Ms Gault, there haven't been any problems in the past! Surely you
are trying to introduce them?

Many of us aren't holding our breath anyway.

Is this free? Will we be likely to be added to some database...?

It's not particularly informative, I found it disappointing.

Especially, one presumes, yourself. Oh well. I'm so grateful that the
ancient orientals and numerous other cultures didn't go in for this kind of
thing. Just imagine where we'd all be today. No Tenmokus, Shinos....no
Egyptian Paste.
It's depressing to see rampant commercialism trying to invade another area
of creativity; one that has in oriental traditions been associated with a
spirituality and striving without ego. Or patents and licensing.
I look forward to hearing what others have to say about this strange state
of affairs.
