Hi all! Paul Lewing will be giving a workshop June 8th(Sat) at Teri Silva's
Studio, Sedro-Woolley, Wa "Glaze Workshop Using the Computer" 10am -4pm. We
are really fortunate having him in this area. For more info Email me at
ewalt@whidbey.net or call Teri at 360-856-5298 or write 634 Goodhew Rd.
Sedro-Woolley, Wa 98284

Also, if anyone is interested in the fair bit, Art by the Bay will be held July
27 & 28 at Utsalady on Camano Island. Great little show. 34 booths that fill up
fast but there are a few left. Please Email me at above or call Betty Dorotik
at 360-387-0148. No commercial booths allowed and work is screened. Artists
have sold very well in the past. This is the third year.

Hi all!

Went to a great workshop on glaze calculation via the Insight program last
Saturday at the studio of Teri Silva-Sedro-Woolley,Wa. If you get a chance to
attend a Paul Lewing workshop, I highly recommend that you do, or ifyou can get
him to come to your area. I learned a lot about glazes, tiles, and will be
getting the Insight program as soon as I sell a few more pots!

Paul makes things very clear, to the beginner as well as to the more advanced
potter.

Elaine, on Camano Island.. It's finally quit raining!

=22Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Glaze=22. June 5....10 am - 4pm

at Architektura, Yelm WA (45 minutes south of Tacoma). =2460

This lecture workshop will explore ceramic glazes, their constituent
materials and oxides, and their behavior during firing. We will begin
with a review of the properties of glaze materials, and move on to a
discussion of the method of empirical formula calculation. We will
discuss color response in glazes, surface characteristics, and the
effect of reduction/oxidation of glazes. Particular emphasis will be put

on Cone 10 reduction and Cone 5-6 oxidation. INSIGHT and HyperGlaze
glaze calculation software programs will be demonstrated and discussed
also. Cone 6 =26 10 glaze recipe =26 info handouts will be provided. The
workshop will conclude with a slide show. Bring any glaze recipes you
are having a challenge with, along with a sample of the glaze. Paul
will try to solve the problem.

Paul Lewing is a studio potter in Seattle, WA. He is considered by
many to be an expert in the field of ceramic glaze. Paul was a
panelist speaking about glaze calculation software at NCECA this year.
He is a constant contributor to Clayart discussion group on the
internet, and a valuable resource for many technical questions
pertaining to clay, glazes, techniques and equipment. Paul=92s tile
murals and panels are a testament to his knowledge of glazes and ceramic

processes. Paul has been the President of both Washington Potters
Association and Northwest Designer -Craftsmen and is currently on the
National Advisory
Board of the Studio Potter Network. He is also involved with the Tile
Heritage Foundation.

Paul:

I am a student at Kirkland Arts Center. I see you are doing a glaze
chemistry workshop October 21-22. I was wondering if you will be working
with glazes in a specific cone range or are you planning to do a more
comprehensive sweep of glazemaking? How much time are you planning to spend
on the Seger formula? I'm just trying to figure out how much of what you are
teaching I already know or don't know. It sounds like a great workshop. Any
specific info you can give would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Michele in Seattle

hi folks - just got back from over the mountains at
yakima, where hub and i attended a great workshop with
paul lewing at yakima valley community college.
paul taught glaze chemistry in a way that started
a thaw in this frozen left brain of mine. he covered
many aspects of glaze materials, formulation, testing,
mixing, application, safety and software - and shared
many of his ^5 and ^10 recipes with us, along with a
slide show of his great tiles.( all of the samples
sold like hotcakes as soon as he brought them out)
we headed home inspired to start tweaking some glazes
we use.

erin hayes(the fourth clayarter i have now met in
person)
was the hostess with the mostest. along with the
sunshine & trees on campus in full bloom, we were
provided with a generous spread of tasty food for the
two days as well as a potluck at erin's.

if anyone is looking to understand more about the
magic of glazes, don't miss the opportunity to take a
class from paul lewing. he has alot of knowledge and
shares it well. lots of laughter! and erin, if you
sponsor any more workshops out there - be sure to let
us know. our thanks to both paul and erin.

I have signed up for Paul's workshop at The Creative Oasis, State College,
PA on Sat-Sun Oct 20-21, and I believe Cheryl Litman is also attending.

Are there any other clayarters who will be attending?

Paul has gotten great reviews as a presenter at other workshops, plus he's
an interesting person, great artist, all around good guy (not necessarily in
that order). He's got a lot of knowledge and tips to share, and he's got an
excellent sense of humor.

I'm really excited about this and it will be interesting and fun to have a
group of clayarters at this presentation.

We had a great time at The Creative Oasis in the spring at Tony and Sheila
Clennell's presentation with a really great group of clayarters and I'll bet
it's as good or better (if that's possible) with Paul.

Hi all,

Are there any other clayarters planning to attend this workshop besides
me, Cheryl Litman & Diane in NY?

Whenever possible I select workshops and continuing education by
instructor first, and I KNOW Paul Lewing will give us a fabulous event.
I'm expecting Paul to illuminate this technical subject for non-chemists
like me. I'd be willing to bet that both glaze novices and more
experienced potters will learn enough to make us all glad we attended,
and we'll have fun doing it.

I do have a personal motive for encouraging attendance. I know how
enjoyable it was to have a group of clayarters at Tony & Sheila
Clennell's presentation in April, 2001. Many of us had not met the others
in person prior to that workshop, but we felt like friends the minute we
met, solely because of the clayart connection. I also don't want to see
this workshop cancelled for lack of advance sign-ups although I don't
know how many people have signed up at this time. So if you were thinking
about attending, now's the time. I have no financial interest in the
Creative Oasis but the facility was very good for a demonstration and
State College, PA is not a bad trip from MANY areas this time of year.

There are motels ranging from about $44 to close to $90 a night in the
area and a nice collection of restaurants at all price levels.

And I have a request for all the Clayarters who are coming to this workshop.
I usually bring all my glaze books to one of these workshops, but I'm trying
to carry as little weight as possible, air travel being what it has lately
gotten to be. So could you all bring all the glaze books you can, please?
I especially would like the ones by Hamer & Hamer, Rhodes, Hopper, Obstler,
Parmalee, Currie, Fraser, Conrad, and any and all others. Thanks.

Just got back from Pa where it was a beautiful fall weekend. A perfect time
for the workshop in State College, "over the hill" from my father's home. i
learned so much from Paul and the others, thank you all. I now understand
what you all are talking about!! My eyes are opened!! It was great meeting
so many ClayArters, but I didn't have enough of a chance to sit and talk to
many. It's so much nicer to have a face to put with a name. Paul did a
great job, and the best thing is, now I have all my books I can go back to,
now that I really understand what is going on. I knew that chemistry and
physics would come in handy. sherry morrow

While i was workshop chair for ACGA Paul came and gave a workshop on
tile making. He gives a wonderful informative workshop. This 2 day
lecture workshop will begin with glaze materials, and basic info on how
to make glaze tests, use a gram scale etc. It will cover firing, glaze
faults, testing and glaze mixing. It will include a slide show of
Paul's work. No glaze chemistry or computer experience is necessary.
