Hello All,
With the arch frame in place we saw that we would need some space to be able
to remove it later. We decided to place shims all around under it. Later we
would knock out the shims, the frame would drop, and we would pull it out.
We began building the arch walls from both sides. To insure alternating
seams we started the first rows on both sides with half bricks. Every other
row would have a half brick in the front or in the back.
When done we knocked out the shims and pulled out the frame.
Problem: Some of the bricks in the front were really loose...wouldn't be
strong. so we replaced the frame and shims...took some force...then used
rubber mallets and tamped each brick. It made a noticeable difference. They
really tightened a lot. We knocked out the shims and removed the frame and
it was great. It was strong enough for a student to travel across it.
However we did mix some fireclay (60) and grog (40), and water, leaving it
somewhat thick, and fixed the front and back keystone bricks in place.
Concerns: Strength (as always), mouse holes, and chimney.

Birdboy,
Thanks for the reply...the only one I got so far. And, yes we are taking
lots of pics. &:-)
