On the subject of pine resin, I think this is the same thing that
baseball players apply to their bats for "grippieness" :-)
It is often called pine tar. It was the cause of a huge brouhaha several
years ago when George Brett applied it too far down the barrel of the
bat.
You may be able to find it in a sporting goods store, or contact your
local major or minor league baseball team's equipment manager.

Last night I discovered that we have a blow torch, and in its old and
battered box (and clinging to parts of the torch!) there was a plastic jar
of black sticky oozy stuff whose smell reminded me of pine needles. I
asked my husband what it was (I knew HE was responsible!) and he said it
was pine tar (resin?) that he used to melt onto the undersides of a pair
of wooden skis. So maybe you could find it in a (probably rather esoteric
style) sportshop! Who knows!
