A friend asks the list for advice for her pit firings.


1) how close> should we be placing pieces to each other

2) how much sawdust in between layers?

Eleanora,

Since glazes won't be used (I assume), it makes no difference how close the
pieces are to one another. Stacking them one inside the other often
produces interesting results, similar to saggaring. Use lots of
combustibles, sawdust or whatever. If stacking inside another pot, be sure
to put lots of "stuff" in the larger one, then fill it up after the smaller
is added.

"How much sawdust" is sort of like "how high is up". You need enough to do
whatever job you want done, for it to get hot enough for your purposes, etc.
Use a lot, and see what happens.
