Howdy. I am doing a pit and sawdust firing this weekend. My pieces are
high fire sculpture clays splattered with brown iron oxide and iron
chromate. Besides salts, egg shells, bananas and seaweed...what other
organic and/or chemicals can you add that will give flashes?
Also, is it better to use hardwood shavings or could one just throw in
anything (dung, grasses, twigs, dead road kill, etc?) Share, share,
share...I want to experiment...so throw some suggestions my way....
gracias

Nancy,
It looks like you are really willing to experiment! Dead road kills, huh?
First I wonder how high you have bisqued your pieces. The lower you
bisque, the more smoke your work will absorb.
I use a fine sawdust which gives a nice finish to my work which is a
Raku clay bisqued to cone 06. Fir cones placed next to the work usually
gives a nice flashing, but try other organic items. I have not tried the
road kill thingy myself...yet.
I must tell you, what works in one firing, may not work in another. This is
really not an exact science.
