A very interesting book that rather scientifically explores the union of work
and creativity is FLOW by Csikszentmihalyi. It's been awhile since I read this
, but apparently, getting into a state of flow or play is is an important part
of a meaningful work experience. Unfortunately , our puritan heritage has
caused many people to see work and play as opposites, which they certainly are
not. Fritjof Capra discusses this also in THE TURNING POINT--he says (and I ha
ve this before me) "In our society most people are unsatisfied by their work an
d see recreation as the main focus of their lives. Thus work has become oppose
d to leisure, and the latter is served by a huge industry...exhorting people to
ever more wasteful consumption." It isn't art that needs to change--but the
society at large needs to redefine what work means.
Jeanne Melchior--who experiences "flow (and a sense of play) in working with
clay, in cleaning house, in teaching, in cooking, in sewing, and in a variety
of other tasks.
